Hampton University Trumpet Studio 

 

 Background 

Rich in history, steeped in tradition, Hampton University is a dynamic, progressive institution of higher education, providing a broad range of technical, liberal arts, and graduate degree programs. In addition to being one of the top historically black universities in the world, Hampton University is a tightly-knit community of learners and educators, representing 49 states and 35 territories and nations. Hampton University is nestled along the banks of the Virginia Peninsula, near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The surrounding city of Hampton features a wide array of business and industrial enterprises, retail and residential areas, historical sites, and miles of waterfront and beaches. Attractions such as Fort Monroe, NASA Langley Research Center and the Virginia Air and Space Center add to the splendor — and just plain fun — of the HU campus.

 

Studio Overview

The Hampton University Trumpet Studio is comprised of a diverse group of undergraduate to graduate level students. Led  by Dr. Steven Cunningham, the trumpet studio is dedicated to shape the next generation of musicians and prepare them for successful careers. Students will learn about trumpet pedagogy, fundamentals, classical performance, jazz/commercial performance and etc. 

Students have the opportunity to participate in the following university performing ensembles: 

  • The Marching F.O.R.C.E. *
  • Symphonic Winds *
  • Concert Band
  • Pep Band
  • Low Brass Ensemble
  • Percussion Ensemble
  • Jazz Band, Big Band, and Combos *
  • University Chamber Orchestra

 

Music Degree Options

Bachelor of Arts in Music (Performance Emphasis)

Bachelor of Arts in Music/Master of Teaching (Pre-Certification)- 5 year program, graduate with a bachelor and masters degree, certified to teach prek-12 in the state of Virginia. 

Bachelor of Science in Music (Music Recording Technology)

Bachelor of Science in Music (Audio Production Emphasis)

The music programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

Trumpet Major Audition Requirements (Performance, Pre-Certification, Music Recording Technology)

• Prepared piece- Please prepare two contrasting etudes or solo pieces that demonstrate your current

level of technique and musicianship.

• 12 Major Scales

• Sight reading

• Brief Interview
