Education

Steven is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park (DMA in Performance and MM in Jazz Performance) and Virginia Commonwealth University ( BM in Performance). Steven is also a graduate of Dinwiddie Senior High School in Dinwiddie, Virginia.

University

Steven earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Trumpet Performance and Master of Music in Jazz Trumpet Performance from the University of Maryland, College Park and studied with Chris Gekker. During his time there, Steven was the trumpet graduate assistant, performed as principal trumpet with the UMD Symphony Orchestra and UMD Wind Orchestra on select concerts and played lead trumpet with the UMD Jazz Ensemble for 5 years. He performed as lead trumpet for the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra, third trumpet in 2015, and 2nd trumpet in 2016. 

Steven earned his Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance from Virginia Commonwealth University and studied with Rex Richardson, Brian Strawly, and Mary Bowden. As a freshman, he performed with with VCU Symphonic Wind Ensemble Sixth Annual New York Wind Band Festival at Carnegie Hall. Steven performed at the National Trumpet Competition and International Trumpet Guild with the VCU Trumpet Ensemble. He won the first annual VCU Concerto Competition with his performance of the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto. Steven received music scholarships throughout his time at VCU in classical and jazz studies.
